What's the distinction between "Special Edition"
and "Special Version"?
While the terms tend to be used interchangeably, for the
purposes of this site "Special Edition" refers
to an edition of a DVD that's a little bit more special than the norm--limited
pressings, extra extras, nice packaging, etc. "Special Version"
refers to the newer 122-minute cut of the film that added new footage,
re-edited some scenes and tweaked the FX (see here
for spoiler information about what was changed). While in some cases they're
synonymous, some "Special Editions," like the French Special
Edition, have the original movie on them and not the special version;
some online stores list the Tartan NTSC Original Version as a "Special
Edition," because it was special for Tartan, a British company to
release a movie on NTSC in addition to a "normal" PAL release.
So, to keep things tidy, all the discs on this page contain the "Special
Version" of the film with the new footage.
