Principal Photography wraps, Afghanistan location shooting planned:
Yomiuri,
Sponichi,
and Sanspo
covered the official "wrap" press conference at the Toei
offices yesterday. Director Kenta Fukasaku announced that domestic
photography wrapped up on April 11, revealed that he has carried
his father's ashes with him every step of the way, and credited
his father for giving him the strength he needed to complete the
film. Shugo Oshinari, Ayana Sakai, and Ai Maeda also participated
in the press conference. Maeda complemented Kenta Fukasaku, saying
that the way he spoke during filming resembled that of Kinji, making
the workplace familiar and identical to how it was when Kinji was
directing the film. Looking back, Maeda said, "it seemed that
Director Kinji was right beside Director Kenta."
It was also announced that the production crew will fly to Afghanistan
at the end of April for a final shoot, fulfilling his father's wish
to include scenes shot in Afghanistan in the movie (the story apparently
has Nanahara spending some time in Afghanistan for training). They
had hoped to shoot there sometime last year, but world events prevented
that, and their visas were only approved this month.
The crew hopes to shoot at the foot of the Hindu-Kush mountain range,
where fields of white almond flowers show life flourishing after
the horrors of war. The crew is making the trip against the advice
of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which still considers
Afghanistan a "war zone."
Water Plant
Location:
The Yokusuka City Waterworks revealed on their website
that the BRII film crew used the tunnels in the town of Tanoura
as a shooting location.

Official Site Announces Books and Merchandise: The
BRII official site has announced no less than 10 titles to hit
Japanese bookstore shelves in June. Go here
for details.
PRINCIPAL
PHOTOGRAPHY WRAPS: Principal photography on BRII was scheduled
to wrap on April 10. Prior to Kinji Fukasaku's passing, shooting
was supposed to end in March, but was subsequently extended to this
date.

Veteran actor playing prime minister: Masahiko Tsugawa, who's
been appearing in Japanese films since the 50's, announced on his
website that he's playing the Prime Minister in BRII.

Foreign distribution deals for BRII already being made: Yomiuri
News reports that even now, offers are rushing in for foreign
distribution rights for BRII. According to Toei, there are
already informal agreements in place with companies from five countries,
including the UK and Russia, with the details to be worked out in
succeeding days. This is exceptional for a Japanese film to already
be assured foreign distribution even as it's still in the middle
of principal photography. The original BR was officially
screened in 22 countries; the distribution rights for BR
had been sold at $2 million a pop. Home video sales in foreign countries
have also been bringing in the highest numbers in Toei's history.
Hong Kong, Britain, Russia, Germany, and Thailand made their offers
for BRII to Toei at the American Film Market held in Los
Angeles last week. No word on whether a North American distribution
deal is forthcoming, which would be unusual given that the first
movie never got distributed in the U.S.
Yoshiko Mita to appear in BRII: Another legendary name
in Japanese cinema, actress Yoshiko Mita, shot her scenes for BRII
on location in Otsuki City, Yamanashi. The 61-year old actress is
playing the mother of Aoi, the student played by Shugo Oshinari.
She'll appear in a flashback scene that establishes how Aoi learns
to distrust adults.
(From Yahoo!
Japan and
Yomiuri Shimbun)
Script up for Auction? A seller at Yahoo! Japan Auctions
put up an item which he claims is the script for the sequel, titled
"Battle Royale II: Jihad" (this runs counter
to the previously-mentioned, recently confirmed sub-title "Requiem").
The script, which was only offered for three days, had a starting
price of 8000 yen and went unsold. The link to the auction is here,
but will probably expire soon. Images of the script are in our Pictures
section.
Lastly, based upon discussion at the BRII official site's
BBS, I've revised the name of the school that the BRII students
hail from, from "Shikanotori" to "Shikanotoride"
(though I'm pretty happy to have come so close with my guess).

Expanded the Pictures section, adding
a few more pics and replacing some with better versions.
Yahoo!
Japan has made available streaming video of an interview (and
some behind-the-scenes shots) of Kenta Fukasaku, Ai Maeda, and Beat
Takeshi. Fun stuff. Check it out:

BR fan Daniel Wang, who runs the Battle Station site at http://brstation.tjfweb.com,
has scanned and uploaded hi-res images of the BRII handbill. Check
them out here,

wallpapers, icons, and fanart.

A
new article in Sponichi talks about Beat Takeshi shooting his
scenes for BRII at Toei Studios yesterday. They're only two
scenes, but they're said to be pivotal to the story as they explain
why his character's daughter Shiori decides to join BRII years later.
The article also talks about the actor having to re-dye his hair black,
his history with Kinji Fukasaku, and his experience shooting the scenes
with the late director's son Kenta. Kitano goes on to praise the younger
Fukasaku with faint damning, in his own caustic way: It took as much
as seven takes to get some of his shots down, when Kitano's been used
to getting things done in two takes; Kitano compares Kenta's excessive
politeness toward him to that of a "proprietress of a Kyoto restaurant." |

Mischa from the BR Yahoo! Group passed along some news blurbs that ran
today in Japanese papers and their online incarnations:
http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/hochi/geinou/mar/o20030310_70.htm
http://www.nikkansports.com/news/entert/p-et-tp0-030311-07.html
http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20030311-00000003-sks-ent
The articles speak
of the location shooting currently going on in Nagasaki Prefecture (Nishisonogi-gun,
including, no doubt, Gunkanjima; the
late Kinji Fukasaku visited the locations in November and thought highly
of them), and the effort being put into the production. The articles mention
that the budget for the Battle Royale 2 is 1,000,000,000 yen (roughly
$9 million, huge for a Japanese production), twice that of the original
BR. And with good reason: the articles say that the sequel boasts
much more literal firepower than the original, with five times as much
explosives and gunpowder used, and an estimated 5,000 rounds of ammunition
to be fired (compared with only 600 in the first movie).
Finally, I've included a link to Gunkanjima.com,
a website with an awesome presentation about the warship island.

I've got better scans of the student images from the BRII
handbill up in the Pictures section. Yes,
I do have one of those handbills in my possession now. :D

It's going to be nearly impossible to overcome all the hurdles, but there's
at least a faint possibility that you, yes, you, can be in BRII.
The Fukasaku official website at http://www.fukasakugumi.com
has put out two casting calls: One for a "mass communications" sequence
that will be shooting for three nights (March 18-20) in Kashima, a port
in the Ibaraki prefecture. From what I can gather, they're looking for
forty people age 20-50, regardless of gender; no pay, but free food. Costumes
will be provided, but the actors will have to find their own means of
transportation to commute to and from the location. The other casting
call is for child actors (age 3-11) for a shoot taking place in Kyushu
on March 15th-16th. No pay, and the kids need to look Middle Eastern or
at least half-Middle Eastern. Anyway, on the remote chance that someone
who reads this fits either of those bills (riiiiight. :) ), contact information
is located on the following page: http://www.fukasakugumi.com/br_boshu.html
Japanese message boards
have been abuzz about sightings of the BRII film crew shooting
scenes in Nagasaki, including some sort of beach landing scene with nice
explosions.
Added a few new people to the cast list, mainly
adults with unspecified roles, and stand-ins for some principal actors.
3/4/03
What's Gunkanjima?
It's an island, it looks like a war zone, it's forbidden to visit, and
it's the perfect staging ground for Battle Royale II! A message
on the Yahoo! Japan message boards says that the BRII film crew
are on the island to shoot scenes for the film.

An anonymous contributor
has sent us a scan of the back of the BRII handbill! Check

Thanks to a tip
from Daniel Wang, who runs the fansite Battle
Station, we now have a look at the front of the handbill that
was distributed with the tickets (now if we only had a look at the
back). Link here for the image. Also
picked up a couple of pictures of BRII
student players in costume.

Yahoo!
Japan and Sponichi
report that, while speaking at an awards show, "Beat"
Takeshi confirmed he will be shooting one or two new flashback scenes
for BRII.
Added two more names to the Cast:
Hiroaki Ito, who lists himself as playing a "soldier"
in BRII on his agency home page, and Nanami Oota, a nine-year-old.

2/23/03
Awesome casting news--legendary martial
arts/action movie actor Sonny Chiba will be making a cameo appearance
in BRII! In a flashback, he'll be playing the uncle of Mimura,
the hacker from the first installment of BR. If you recall,
Mimura mentions that his uncle was a revolutionary who tried to
blow up Parliament.
Battle
Royale fans in Japan lined up yesterday for the pre-sale of tickets
to BRII. Among the bonus goodies the lucky ones got (while supplies
lasted) were 20,000 replicas of the collar pin worn by the students
of BRII, and a brochure for the new movie.
|
The leaflet has the
logo on one side, and on the other side is a mock newspaper-like layout
announcing: "THIS TIME, IT'S A PAIR TAG MATCH! The exploding collars
are to be linked...BRII 42 students versus terrorist war begins!"
" NANAHARA
SHUYA FOUND! Internationally designated terrorists...over 30 known in
hiding...make sure they are killed." The mock paper's index talks
about the amendments made to the BR program (that turn it into BRII);
Nanahara, Wild Seven, and the "incident" they caused (which leads me to
believe the Shinjuku bombing takes place near the beginning of the movie,
and isn't the climax); and that Shikanotori (my take on the name--actual
pronunciation may be different) Junior High School Class 3B has been picked
for BRII (ya know, if you're a ninth grader in BR's Japan, perhaps it's
a good idea to transfer to class 3A). The leaflet goes on to list the
42 actors' names (not their roles).
2/20/03
Two more names in the cast list, including a kid named "Yuuma."
No word on what role he's playing, but in the novel, Noriko Nakagawa did
have a little brother...
Speaking of Noriko, fans are speculating about the fate of Nakagawa in
the sequel, given the fact that Aki Maeda is reportedly making only a
cameo appearance. While there's no indication that she dies in the sequel,
the possibility that she does and that Nanahara's turning into a terrorist
to avenge her "makes sense," according to some Japanese BR fans
posting on the Japanese website. Many are just plain unhappy with the
fact that she won't be a major character.
Replicas of the super-neato camouflage outfits worn by the BRII students
are already being displayed in stores by BA-TSU, the clothing designer
label responsible for the costume designs of both BR movies. They don't
come cheap, though.

We have a release date! July 5th (hmm...auspiciously close to the American
Independence Day...)
"BRII Special Volume 1," a half-hour documentary about the making
of the movie from pre-production to the death of Kinji Fukasaku during
filming, aired on Japanese television this weekend, and we now have a
practically complete Cast List! I've had to break
it up into three pages to accomodate all the new names and pics! Stay
tuned as more information and puctures come in from the special.
2/12/03
Three more names to Cast (including a familiar
face that we knew all along was back, but neglected to mention), plus
one of the first BRII pictures is now in color.
2/7/03
Added two more names to the Cast, added some background
information on some of the actors, added a picture and an animated graphic
in the Pictures section--the first color pics
of the BRII Uniform--and some shots of the new (?) collars
2/3/03
Corrected a URL and put one more name in the Cast.
2/2/03
Added two more to the Cast list.
2/1/03
Added three new names and faces to the Cast
list.

The official BRII site has been updated with
a 3 1/2 minute long promotional clip that leads off with rehearsal footage
from November with Kinji Fukasaku calling the shots, and concludes with
an expanded teaser featuring a new BRII logo and a breathtaking final
shot!
Screencaptures from
the new teaser can be seen in the new Pictures
page.
