| KUBRICKS
(***): These are action figure toys made by Medicom (a Japanese
toy company), and they resemble LEGO people, only a bit larger.
Medicom makes all sorts of movie/TV tie-in Kubrick action figures
(the original Planet of the Apes, Spider-Man, even The Blair Witch
Project). The Kubricks are often found as a three-pack containing
figures of Kitano, a male student (no-one in particular, but kinda
looks like Sugimura to me), a female student, a pair of little weapons,
a commemorative pen (with light-up LED's so you can see what you're
writing in the dark), and a replica of the map, all in a pouch that
looks almost exactly like the ones the students carried their maps
in for the film. Some sets also come with removable battle damage
stickers: bloody wounds, bullet holes, scars and bandages you can
apply to the action figure! The three Kubricks are also sold in
single packs containing a smaller map and the damage stickers. The
Battle Royale Kubricks are rare enough to have people fighting bidding
wars over them on eBay, yet common enough for these wars to happen
on a weekly basis. |

PHONE
CARDS (*): There were at least two phone cards sold to promote
the movie: One with Aki Maeda, and one of the now famous class picture.
|
CLEAR
FILE (*): Japanese students like putting their schoolwork into
clear plastic folders, the equivalent of school binders in the U.S.
So it's not surprising that a BR Clear File was part of the merchandising.
|
BLOODY
STRAP (*): A cell phone strap with an embroidered design. The
"Bloody Strap" was sold in both original and Special Edition versions. |
 |
 |
 |
BUCKLE
KEYHOLDER (*): Somewhat akin to the Bloody Strap (like the strap,
it's got the words "Battle Royale" and silhouettes of some weapons),
this is made of a plastic buckle, some embroidered cloth, and loops
(for your belt and for your keys).
|
BLOODY
MOUSEPAD (*): Apparently a round, black-and-white mousepad featuring
the BR logo. The cool part: red gel inside the mouse pad that oozes
over the logo. |
GUN
LIGHTER (*): Here's one you wouldn't want to bring to school.
It looks like a miniature pistol; pull the trigger and the gun's
mechanism pulls back, and a flame erupts from where the cartridge
would eject. Snazzy BR logo on the gun handle. |
|
|
| POSTERS/HANDBILLS(*):
There's no doubt a variety of posters that were made in the countries
where the movie was released. Whether they were commercially available
to consumers (or merely distributed to theaters) is another matter,
which may explain why large domestic posters for Battle Royale and
its Special Version are hard to find and/or ridiculously expensive.
Extremely rare is the "Hombo" poster (shown above right),
which was only given away in promotions. |
